Secret #9: The Pause That Commands Attention

A few summers ago, a group of senior professionals whose first language wasn’t English spent a few weeks on Long Island taking sailing lessons. Their English proficiency was strong. But they kept having to ask their instructor to repeat himself. Not because of a language barrier. Because he spoke too fast.

Every repetition meant frustration. Wasted time. And moments where they simply gave up following along and hoped for the best.

I hear this constantly from my international clients: native speakers speak too fast.

Most speakers fear silence. So they fill every gap with words, rushing from one point to the next. The result? Listeners feel overwhelmed—and tune out.

Here’s what master communicators know: strategic pauses give your message room to land.

A well-placed pause lets your audience absorb what you’ve said, reset, and get ready to hear what’s coming next. On a phone call especially—where there’s no body language to support understanding—rate and pausing do even more work.

✨ Secret #9: Silence is your power move.

And it’s also your awareness check. Communication H.U.E. asks: Are they understanding?

When you pause, you give your listener a chance to catch up—and yourself a chance to read the room.

Here’s how to master the pause:
    •    Pause after important statements—let them land for 2-3 seconds
    •    Pause before answering questions—it signals thoughtfulness
    •    Pause instead of saying “um”—silence beats filler every time
    •    Slow your overall rate—especially on calls or with non-native English speakers

👉 Action step: In your next conversation, consciously pause for 2 seconds after a key point. Notice how it feels like power—not awkwardness.

The space between your words is where impact lives.

Do you communicate regularly across cultures or languages? Speaking with international colleagues, clients, or teams requires an extra layer of awareness—and a communication strategy built around their experience, not just yours. Let’s talk about how iSpeak Clearly can help.
